Althea Menard

Position: Science Lab Teacher

School: Beneke Elementary

School District: Spring Independent School District

How has this person changed your life?:

For 26 years I have watched Ms. Menard give of herself tirelessly to students, teachers, staff and the community in providing instruction, support and participating in initiatives to make a positive difference in the life of a student. Her teaching span ranges from kindergarten to university status where she has taught, trained and mentored. She goes beyond the call of duty in finding opportunities for students to shine. Her focus is on caring for the whole child by creating opportunities for students to receive scholarships, internships, educational and athletic travels and even health care provisions so that a student can be productive emotionally, socially and academically. She creates unique ways to achieve student mastery in test scores and demonstrates outstanding leadership in partnerships with businesses in the community. Stars that shine the brightest are the ones closest to you. That is why Ms. Menard, my mom, is my shiny star and should be nominated as a 2018 Shiny Star. Her teaching efforts have made such a positive impact on my life that I too now serve as a teacher in hopes to continue to share the love she has given to thousands of individuals in her teaching career.

Alicia Yarbrough

Position: Behavior Specialist

School: Ramey Elementary

School District: Tyler Independent School District

How has this person changed your life?

Mrs. Yarbrough has such a quiet and mild spirit as a woman, a teacher, a wife, a mother and a friend. She is so very kind hearted and treats all of the elementary students at Ramey in such kind and caring manner regardless of their behavior. She is never harsh or cruel and the children are drawn to her. She goes out of her way to assist wherever she is needed on the campus and does so with a smile. I have never heard her speak negatively about anyone or raise her voice to anyone. She is a perfect example of what it means to be kind and I think that she is certainly a shining star.

Shannon Bostick

Position: Special Education Teacher

School: Woodard Elementary

School District: Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District

How has this person changed your life?:

Teaching in Texas; it’s a large state, but not everything is large. Teachers receive very little support or the monies needed to effectively service their students. They are spread so thin and it shows. Writing a 200 word limit explanation on how rare and extraordinary Mrs. Bostick is feels impossible. She always puts her students first even before her job. She uses her own money to provide what her students need. She gets very creative with her household products and turns them into learning tools. When services are not provided she finds ways and time to provide them. She volunteers her time to tutoring clubs and is always available when parents need assistance. If she sees that a student needs assistance and she doesn’t have the answers she finds them. She really pays attention to students individual learning styles; in all honesty I wish she could train all of my sons teachers. I’m sure we’ve not always seen eye to eye, but her professionalism would never show that as she always smiles through a storm. My son has never responded to a teacher the way he responds to her. I was forced to carry him into his last campus and ever since we switched to Mrs. Bostick’s campus he cries to go to school to see her. He was absent from school very frequent at his previous campus and now that he’s with her he has had perfect attendance for two years! I personally could never repay her for being his school mom; I can’t think of any other instructor that deserves this more than Mrs. Bostick.

Bobbie Johnson

Position: Librarian
School: Florence Stiles Middle School

School District: Leander Independent School District

How has this person changed your life?:

Mrs. Johnson currently supports a campus that houses over 1,200 students. She not only ignites excitement in students to read, but she also helps support all teachers as they pursue new and innovative ways to teach. She has committed library funds to renovation so a space could be created for students to eat lunch who need a quiet, less intimidating place to eat. When she is not leading literary circles with students, she is sponsoring five campus student clubs including Coding Club, Chess Club, Book Club, Science Olympiad and Knitting Club. She houses our campus maker space and even does her best to support the technology needs of everyone on campus. There is never a time in which her library is closed to students as she feels strongly that a "school library has the ability to unite a campus." Students beg to be library aides and her colleagues have nominated her several times for "Faculty of the Month." She is true asset to our campus and encompasses the heart of an educator.

She came into my life at a time I was really low in health and positivity. I had so much on my plate but had a job to do and she really gave a helping hand and brought joy to my life each day she worked with me as a math helper/tutor for my classroom. She helped me to feel better by bringing in such a beautiful heart and presence for me and my students. I am forever grateful for the day I meet her last year!

Mrs. Irungu is a teacher leader. When I began to teach, she walked me through the process that i needed badly as a new teacher. She does this every year. it comes to her naturally to nurture new teachers at the same time allowing them to find their place in the classroom. She is calm and always has a project brewing in her head always, as well as a cup of tea. She steps up to encourage struggling teachers in the school. [...]

How has this person changed your life?:
Jenifer Hogan is the most dedicated educator I know. No other has the heart and passion for children that I see in Mrs. Hogan. Many of our students come from extreme poverty. Many lack consistent utility services, sufficient food, and family stability. Mrs. Hogan organizes community services to meet those needs. She makes sure all our students have adequate clothing, weekend meals, and a variety of family resources. With poverty often comes trauma and tragedy. Our students have more than their share. [...]
